about

Dominie Hooper’s debut single Dandelion is out on Friday 13th May 2022.

After an incredible track record working with the likes of Yola, Alabaster Deplume, Band of Burns and BBC Folk Award winner Ríoghnach Connolly, this is the arrival of Dominie Hooper’s hotly anticipated solo project.

With her debut single and forthcoming EP ANNO, Dominie Hooper presents a body of work that draws from the folkloric springs of her native Dartmoor, while serving an alternative and electrified flare.

Recorded in December of last year in Wicker Studios (the same house-studio Kate Bush recorded Hounds Of Love), it features Hooper's hand-picked collaborators; Corrie Dick (from Mercury-nominated band Dinosaur) on drums, Mikey Kenney (who also plays with Vinicio Capossela) on fiddle, Phil Self on guitars, bass and keys, with Hooper on electric guitar and lead vocals.

Hooper writes:
“The lyrics for Dandelion were started when my first serious relationship was crawling to a painful end. I picked a dandelion clock and got lost in its flying helicopter seeds, realising I was un-anchored and no longer held by the ground I was standing on. It was one of those pivot moments, not just for that heartbreak, but my whole life; I felt the release of change that I’d been resisting, like a dam breaking. I completed the song during the first lockdown, and knew immediately that it needed big drums, big guitars, and a big ending - much like the story it holds. The arrival of this song marked a change for me, and felt like the birth of a new direction, in life and music, everything.”

Dandelion is a powerful arrival, suggesting an English answer to bands and artists like Big Thief, Julia Jacklin and Aldous Harding. The song’s equal measures of heart and grit set solid foundations for Hooper’s upcoming EP and full-band headline tour next month.

Listen to Dandelion. Play it to your friends, family, colleagues, passers by, your heartbroken best friend. This is a sit up and listen moment. Watch out for Dominie Hooper, she is coming.

lyrics

Dandelion gone to seed
where will the wind take me
though I begged it not to leave
lift me by a gentle breeze
I’m no longer held
wonder when the end is

The frame was in and out of view
the winding roads
it was long since pretty
the sun was followed by the moon
and her sorry tales
and her sorry wails

And the garden wilted long before
now the wildlife knows
it’s all for them
I took my things and closed the door
and the tears fell
and they washed us clean

and I wish you well my love
I wish you knew yourself
my love
and I wish you well my love
I wish you’d know yourself
my love
